What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque from deep beneath the gum line. This proven treatment for early gum disease is also used to protect your oral health down the road.
We want to remove plaque from the pockets around your teeth because we want to prevent periodontitis from getting worse. By acting as quickly as possible, we can remove plaque now, stop the progression of inflammation around your gum tissue, and protect your oral health.
If you cannot remove plaque and tartar using brushing and dental floss alone, we may recommend scaling and planing. We have a variety of tools we can use to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
When Do You Need Scaling and Planing?
There are a few signs and symptoms that could indicate that you will benefit from scaling and planing. They include:
- Gums bleed while brushing your teeth
- Red, tender, and inflamed gum tissue
- Deep pockets around your teeth
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temps
- Loose teeth that feel unstable while chewing
If you feel like your gum tissue doesn’t look quite as robust as it once did, we may recommend scaling and planing. We want to protect not only your gum tissue but also your jawbone, and we may recommend scaling and planing to help with that.
When you come in for regular dental exams and cleanings, we will look for any signs and symptoms of gum disease. We may then recommend a customized treatment plan to address your needs.
Our Approach to Scaling and Root Planing
We want to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure, so we will apply a topical anesthetic to numb your mouth. We want to minimize all potential anxiety, so we can discuss other options as well if you need further support.
After that, we will use state-of-the-art tools to thoroughly remove all the plaque from your teeth. We’ll also rinse away any debris and then suction the saliva and rinse water away. The process usually takes less than an hour to complete from start to finish.
We’ll do all we can to keep you comfortable through the procedure. If you have additional questions and concerns, we will answer them before the procedure. If you have questions about the health of your gums, give us a call today at (719) 268-9400 to speak with our team of professionals.
Our patients always come first, and we want to take care of your oral health while providing you with a comfortable environment. That is the Pine Creek Dental experience.
